With access to virtually every number plate on the market, RegTransfers have truly positioned themselves as the UK’s leading supplier of personal number plates. Their underlying philosophy has always been that there is always “something for everyone”. What are Cherished Number Plates all about? The first registration system in the world began in Baden, Germany in 1896. Great Britain introduced compulsory registration on 1st January 1904. A system had to be thought up to make the growing number of car drivers accountable for their vehicles and their actions on the roads. One of the ideas considered was to give a name to each car – like ships. Fortunately this wasn’t used! And the alphanumeric system was born. Registration marks were issued in Great Britain as early as August 1903, but it was in December 1903 that the London County Council issued the first London mark, A 1, to Earl Russell. Commonly misunderstood by many, personal or cherished number plates can now sell for more than the average priced house. Prestigious numbers such as MG 1 and MS 1 are 100-year-old antiques! They are also among the most popular initials in the country. In December 1993 an anonymous buyer paid a staggering £235,000 for their ultimate number plate: ‘K1 NGS’ (Kings). More astounding was the time it took the auctioneer to achieve this figure – just over two minutes! Other examples of registrations sold for large amounts of money are: ‘1 A’ £202,000; ‘S1 NGH’ (Singh) £108,000; ‘1 RR’ £106,000; ‘G1 LLY’ (Gilly) £87,500; ‘P1 LOT’ (Pilot) £82,500& ‘ ELV 1S’ (Elvis) £75,000. Thankfully not all registration marks are so expensive. Many start from as little as £79, plus a fee of £80 payable to the Department of Transport on all vehicle to vehicle transfers. Love them or hate them, personal number plates are becoming more and more popular, as a mark of individuality and often as an investment for the future. Who buys Personal Number Plates? Traditionally the status symbol of celebrities such as Jimmy Tarbuck (COM 1C) and Paul Daniels (MAG 1C), personal plates have now become the ultimate accessory for every car owner due to the huge variety of plates available at very reasonable prices. Take a look at some of the customer’s stories on the PR page or in the new Free customer magazine. *excluding Department of Transfer fee of £80 +VAT
