About British Vintage Wireless Society

The BVWS holds regular auctions of quality wireless sets and other equipment at its Harpenden and Wootton Bassett events.

The British Vintage Wireless Society (BVWS) is a society of approximately 1700 World-wide members sharing a common interest in the preservation and communication of technical and historical data, and the preservation and restoration of Vintage radio and related equipment.

We publish a quarterly Bulletin containing a wide range of restoration and historical articles, photographs of events, Society news etc. This is a high quality publication. A sample bulletin is available on this website. We hold regular meetings around the UK. Our main event takes place at Harpenden three times a year, with smaller meetings held in Wiltshire and Cheshire. These meetings have stalls selling vintage radio and related items, and often also include a bring-and-buy stall, working displays of vintage equipment, historical presentations and an auction. Refreshments are available at reasonable prices.

Take a look at the events diary page for current details. The Society regularly produces supplements for members, consisting of both Technical, historic and documentary interest. Over the past few years we have produced (with Copyright permission) CD-ROMs of the Trader Service sheets 1 to 1899, all BVWS Bulletins no longer in print and all editions of 405 Alive magazine, several DVDs containing historic films, plus a number of other paper supplements and our own history book. These are all free to members. Our Society relies on new membership, new Bulletin articles and new ideas to enable it to flourish and secure its future for generations to come. If you have an interest in collecting and restoring old equipment, or just looking at or listening to old radios, televisions or Hi-Fi, then why not consider becoming a BVWS member.

If you wish to sell any vintage radio equipment, perhaps because you are scaling down your collection or because you are dealing with the estate of a collector, we would be pleased to help. We charge commission of 10% from current members & 20% from non-members, plus any transportation at cost (if you can deliver to Swindon this can be avoided). Nothing else - no other charges! Because we have considerable experience of auctioning vintage wireless collections, we will ensure that your items are sold for the best prices. We can deal with valuations, cataloguing and setting realistic reserves (we will not let quality items sell too cheaply). We will provide full reports showing the prices achieved, commission charged etc. We aim to make the process as simple as possible for the seller - just get the items to us and then wait for the cheque! We have included the results of recent auctions here, to give you an approximate indication of the prices raised. If you have some items to sell, please contact Mike Barker (BVWS Chairman) on chairman.
